Manu Venugopal finished his Ph.D. from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He also has a Masters in Computational Science and Engineering from the College of Computing At Georgia Tech. His doctoral research titled Formal Specification of Industry Foundation Class Concepts using Engineering Ontologies”, introduced a new software engineering methodology aimed at improving the model exchange semantics and was funded by a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) grant.

At Georgia Tech, Manu is involved in a variety of engineering projects involving Building Information Modeling (BIM) at the Digital Building Lab headed by Professor Chuck Eastman and emerging technologies for the construction industry at the RAPIDS Laboratory headed by Dr. Jochen Teizer. More recently, he has been involved with the development of a Precast National BIM Standard in association with the Precast- Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) and the Charles Pankow Foundation.

He recently published a research paper on Semantics of Model Views for Information Exchanges using the Industry Foundation Class schema.

Research Ambitions

Digital models are becoming the basis for design, analysis, simulation, construction planning, construction execution, operation and maintenance. As various tools and technology for virtual design and construction mature, it is important to integrate them with existing processes and work flows in the industry. There is a need for addressing seamless data exchange between users and systems, in what is called interoperability. With the goal of an open-BIM framework catering to the entire lifecycle of building and infrastructure projects in mind, I envision a three-tiered approach, namely fundamental, applied and socio-economic, towards conducting my research.

At one end of the spectrum, I plan to direct future research in resolving this interoperability problem in design, engineering and construction at a fundamental level by specifying new methods and standards. An example for such fundamental research is an automated information exchange protocol using Industry Foundation Classes (IFC). In terms of applied research, I plan to focus on developing and integrating new technologies and solutions for virtual design and construction. Automated rapid prototyping of a rich and detailed information model from spatial data, for as-built control and facility management are examples of applied research I intend to pursue in the future. Improvements in interoperability research and better work flows in industry will lead to savings in the form of reduced wastage of resources and rework.

I envision an overall improvement in the quality of products for construction community with the help of new computer aided design tools, new special purpose applications, and innovative processes, which will transfer to new lines of education. The open-BIM framework, which is my long term interest, will lead to disseminating the benefits of research to the entire industry, for example, developing an integrated dashboard for building performance monitoring to achieve a better LEED rating, thereby, improving the socio-economic fabric of society leading to sustainable development.

Digital Building Laboratory -  The Georgia Tech Digital Building Laboratory purpose is to develop a strong research and development link between the building industry and the building research-related capabilities of Georgia Tech to improve the innovation cycle.

Rapids Laboratory -  The RAPIDS laboratory specializes on construction safety and technology research and education in the construction, mining, transportation, and infrastructure sectors.
