The design of the new School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California illustrates both its legacy as the first film school and its leadership as one of the top schools in the world. The chosen California style – popular 80 years ago when the school was founded marks that distinction; meanwhile advanced design features ensure its 100-year durability and high-performance efficiency. In January 2009, faculty, staff and students moved into the largest and most innovative portion of the eventual “campus within a campus.” This Phase 1 portion is a two-building set - each with four floors plus one combined sub-level -- totaling 137,000 square feet of space and serving as the central location for administrative and educational functions.
Founded in 1881, Maryland General Hospital (MGH) is one of the hospitals that make part of the University of Maryland Medical System (see Figure 1). The MGH is located in downtown Baltimore, providing a full spectrum of healthcare to more than 110,000 patients in west Baltimore (UMMS 2010). In the years previous to 2007, the hospital experienced considerable growth in admissions, births, emergency room visits, and outpatient visits. Therefore, to address the health care needs of the growing patients and improve its core facilities, the hospital initiated a central care expansion in December 2007. The 96,534 square foot expansion completed in March 2010 was connected to the existing structure (built in the 1950s) and included 8 new operating suites, 4 specialty rooms, 18-bed intensive-care units (ICU), a pharmacy, and a laboratory among others (MGH 2010, Goodykoontz 2009).
SHoP Architecture, located in Lower Manhattan—New York City, NY, was founded in 1996 and has grown into an internationally acclaimed design firm with an accomplished library of built projects and awards. In 2004, SHoP Architecture embraced the Building Information Modeling (BIM) process to facilitate design and documentation tasks. In 2007, the in-house construction-services of SHoP Architects grew into SHoP Construction—also implementing BIM processes. The two sister firms handle projects from design to construction, and thus represents the SHoP brand as an integrator and benefactor of BIM.
After being abandoned for 17 years, The Toronto National Bank Building was transformed into
the Courtyard by Marriott (Fig 2), a contemporary hotel in the heart of Portland’s business
district, designed by SERA architects. The Toronto National Building was built in 1982 and it
was never inhabit until now. Three new floors were added to the exiting thirteen story building,
the entire facade was removed and replaced for a new one, new systems were added to match
the hotel needs, and the existing structure was upgraded according to the new loads. And
adjacent three story building was demolished and replaced with a new 4 story structure
accommodating parking access as well as public, and back of house functions.
Objects whose shape and other parameters are defined by a user; users can build an object from scratch and have full control on the design of an object in terms of 1) the geometric representation and behavior; 2) properties; 3) constraints and variables for its parametric behavior.
At the implementation level, a user definable object is sometimes constructed based on a class of a predefined object, allowing user to associate additional properties to a specialized object.
